If Docker Hub isn’t working for you
Docker Hub is Docker's public container registry, the default place docker pull fetches images from.
Common Docker Hub errors
| Error | What it means | Usually | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
You have reached your pull rate limit. You may increase the limit by authenticating and upgrading: https://www.docker.com/increase-rate-limits | You hit Docker Hub's pull rate limit as an unauthenticated or Docker Personal user (HTTP 429). | Your side | Log in with docker login, upgrade, or wait for the limit to reset. Source |
Too Many Requests | You hit Docker Hub's abuse rate limit, often from a broken CI/CD pipeline (HTTP 429). | Your side | Fix runaway pipelines and add retries with backoff. Source |
Unexpected status code 500 | A temporary Docker Hub service issue. | An outage | Check Docker's status page and try again. Source |
Is it just you?
- Run docker login; anonymous pulls share a rate limit per IP address, so CI runners and offices hit it quickly.
- Check whether your CI uses a pull-through cache or mirror that may be the one failing.
- Try pulling a small official image such as hello-world to separate Docker Hub from a specific repository.
- Check dockerstatus.com for registry incidents.

Questions
Unauthenticated and Docker Personal users have a pull rate limit, counted per IP address for anonymous pulls. Log in or upgrade, or wait for it to reset.
500 errors on pull usually mean a temporary Docker Hub issue; Docker's docs say to check its status page. 429 errors are rate limits, not outages.

Get alerted when Docker Hub breaks your app.
If your product or your team depends on Docker Hub, its outage is your outage, and your users will blame you, not Docker Hub. Point a Site Qwality monitor at the Docker Hub endpoint you actually rely on, put your own site next to it, and we alert you on Slack, email, SMS or any webhook the moment either one stops answering.
